Many years later when I was more articulate I would describe things to my family members, specifically my grandparents and mother. I'd say, "Do you remember that house?" Or I'd say, "Do you remember that item in the house?". Sometimes, I would say, "I remember having one of these, but I don't know where it went."
These things would always confound the adults as I had never seen that house. It burned to the ground before I was born and the items I remembered were in that house. The joke in my family is that since I was born the week my great grandmother died that we had met up as she went up and I came down and had talked. The house I described and the things I described all belonged to her.
When I was around the age of seven I think we were going through old photos. I found a woman I recognized and I asked who she was and why she didn’t come around any more because she had been a frequent part of my life when I was quite small. Everyone got very quiet and asked me if I was sure it was "this" woman and I said that I was sure it was her. I described her some more, like her perfume she always wore and how she always had candy in her pocket, etc.
Again, I asked why she no longer came around and that's when they explained to me that the woman in the photograph was my great grandmother! Yes, the same peron who had died the week I was born. In retrospect perhaps she was 'Garfunkel?'
