Learn about the Cherokee Indian occupation of the Valley Beautiful prior to the arrival of the first white settlers to East Tennessee, as well as the little known Civil War battle of "Red Banks" fought on the banks of Unicoi County's Nolichucy River... In addition, Unicoi County is full of folklore and legend! Never before has it all been pulled together in a way that presents to our tour participants a new picture of where we've come from and where we've been. This is our tour of Tennessee's oldest town established in 1779. Here, our guests can get a "feel" for the charm and mystery surrounding the history and lore associated with both recent as well as past extraordinary and mysterious encounters with the unexplained. While trodding some of the most historic streets in the entire State, your guide will amaze you with a titilating recount of little known ghostly facts as you embark upon your afternoon and evening adventure. Be sure to visit the local shop owners to browse fine antiques and sample some of the wonderful varieties of food... There are interesting observations made by those attending this tour with regard to the ongoing activity in many of this tours historic structures. Many people who have taken this tour have told us that they believe it to be one of the spookiest tours! The "Hale Springs Inn" (pictured left) is one of the oldest, continually operating inns in the State. Rogersville is also host to the oldest Courthouse in the State and the site of Tennessee's first Post Office with East Tennessee being America's "First Western Frontier"!!! Learn about the historic and tragic Civil War "Battle of Blountville" departing from the old Sheriff's House, also called the "Old Jail". Soon visitors will be able to tour the interior of the newly restored "Deery Inn" (pictured left) before engaging in this lantern-led tour of the town. The Deery is scheduled to open to the public for daytime tours around Christmas later this year. Once again, you're invited to travel back through time and visit the people of the past. Walk down Main Street in old Abingdon, Virginia established in 1778, originally named Wolf Hill by Daniel Boone in the year of 1760. Your guide will enlighten you on the life and times of those long gone who appear to be holding on to the present by virtue of their interactions and apparitions apparent to local patrons and business owners alike... While visiting this historic locale, be sure to take advantage of fine dining from The Tavern Restaurant, established in 1779, which is one of the oldest buildings in the Southeastern United States still being utilized and open to the public for business. You just might have an encounter with "The Lady of the Tavern", as we like to call her, who you'll hear more about during the tour... After the GhostWalk, take a tour of The Martha Washington Inn upon learning about the Inn's history as well as the ghostly happenings that have occurred there over the years... In addition, we highly recommend that you make an attempt to time your visit so that you can catch one of the wonderful live plays at the prestigious Barter Theatre, the longest running professional resident theatre in America. The Barter's interior auditorium, in addition to other parts of the building, serve as a home for many mysterious happenings which we will again share with you during the GhostWalk. What former ETSU President still walks the campus grounds? Who are the ghostly residents of the old Sherrod Library? In order to create the proper "tone" for this hauntingly, spine-tingling tour, Appalachian GhostWalks begins this GhostWalk at the ETSU clocktower. Join us for a walking tour of the campus of East Tennessee State University. Your guide will lead you on a journey into the history and mysteries of one of Tennessee's oldest college's where everyone may share the legends, stories and unusual happenings of the University's past and present on this 'ghostly' tour. Does the first president of the University still roam the campus and halls? This and several other stories will put you in a state of wonder and you'll find out about them all on this thrilling GhostWalk!!! It's just another exciting way to learn about the area's past and have fun with a chance at your very own experience with the unexplained. In addition, there are dozens of nearby restaurants where the group can grab a bite to eat after the tour and discuss personal ghostly encounters... Naturally, there is no charge for ETSU faculty, or students with a valid ID to participate in the on campus tours, but there is a minimum of 5 paid persons to operate the tour.
